Homeschool Classroom

OK.  So.  Two years ago we bought a house.  A year and three quarters ago we added a room… a school room.  The kids and I were so excited to have a dedicated school room again!

A year and three quarters later that “school room” is empty and the excitement has dwindled.  Still no flooring, still no paint, still no desks, still no storage, still no whiteboard.  Sigh.  I guess that’s the down side of being do-it-yourselfers and the only days you have to work on diy projects are Saturdays.  And that’s if something better to do doesn’t pop up, or if your back is feeling up to it, or if there are no weddings, funerals or birthday parties.

My hubby is an awesome do-it-yourselfer, and can build just about anything.  The trouble is the waiting.  Sigh again.  But, what’s that?  A glimmer of hope?  We were actually using the “school room” in it’s unfinished condition for a year, but this past weekend we moved all of the way-to-big furniture and computers downstairs to the dining room.  Makes for awkward family dinners, but I am confident it will be worth it.

The room is an empty, clean slate ready for some fabulous flooring and ultra-practical workstations.  Hubby is going to build everything and I’m hopeful that we’ll actually get it done before the end of this school year.  :o)  The upside?  One day, I will once again have a dedicated room, albeit small, for school and I have plenty of time to gather the most amazing ideas to make it a practical, functional, and fun place for the kids to learn.

I’ll post updates with pics as we progress and would love to see your school room as well.  Do you have a dedicated school room or area?  Post your pics!  I’ll take all the input I can get!

Ack! Back to School? Already?

Wow!  Was that the shortest Summer break ever or what?  Well, for those of us in my neck of the woods anyway.  My kids like to stick with the public school schedule for the most part so they are out at the same time as the kids in the neighborhood.  They started back on August 11.  Too early for me.  Maybe I shouldn’t have given them the option.  The girls were ready to start, but, boy I wasn’t!  In years past I could barely wait to start school after a nice summer break, but this year was different.

Have you ever felt so very discombobulated, unorganized, and unmotivated at times?  Like a brand new homeschool mom entering the realm of the unknown and uncertain?  That was me two weeks ago, despite the fact that we’re entering our 6th year.  Between having no language arts or science curriculum, moving our school room to the dining room to make room for remodeling (that’ll be another post in itself), and just a general sense of unreadiness, I was less than excited for the beginning of the new school year.

That had to change.  In fact, it was about to, thanks, in part, to our field trip on the 2nd day of school to an amazing art museum in Escondido, California.  During our visit I began to get excited about the new year and the creative juices began to flow once again.  That in itself felt like victory to me.  The California Center for the Arts has the amazing exhibition, Leveled: An Interactive Experiment Art, which runs through December 31, 2010.  We highly recommend it if you are anywhere in the area and have a couple of hours to spend.  Children’s admission is free and adults are $5.00.  To be honest, after visiting their website, my expectations were not high.  Well, let me just tell you, the website does not do the exhibit justice!  My girls, the grandmas and I had a fabulous time!

You will be amazed at the fort by artist Wes Bruce… by far the best part for us.  This is truly an interactive art exhibit that will transport you back in time to your favorite childhood fantasies.  I immediately had the urge to come home and build my kids and I our own fort.  We were so inspired by the fort that it became the basis for our first three language arts lessons.  Fun stuff!  Check it out!

So, what’s your back to school story?
